If it is the first time you are taking your child skiing (or snowboarding) then you could either find that they take to it easily and you won't be able to get them off the slopes or that it's an uphill battle ending in tears.
Lessons are a great way for children to pick up good skills, and fields that are family friendly have qualified instructors who are used to teaching children. Just remember to make sure that your children are warm and have plenty to eat and drink. Keep a fresh change of clothes in the car just in case their ski clothes get wet from the snow and an extra bottle of water and snacks won't go amiss either.

The Whakapapa ski area is well suited for families and offers both ski lessons and equipment hire. Happy Valley is a sheltered area that is great for families with children. This area has been specially designed for beginners and is separate from the other ski areas. Between Mother Nature and a snow-making machine, there is always plenty of snow for beginners to learn on and fall into.

Turoa Yeti Kids' Centre is a fully licensed childcare facility for children aged 2-5 years. The youngest members of your family will have a fun-filled day at the snow and can even learn to ski while you enjoy skiing or riding the slopes at Turoa. The Alpine Meadow at the base of Turoa Ski Area is a wonderful little beginners' area. It has a massive 120m-long carpet lift. If you haven't seen one of these before it's basically like a conveyer belt or travelator over the snow. You just stand on it and it takes you smoothly and easily up the slope.
The Alpine Meadow is right next to the Alpine Chalet where you'll find good coffee, meals, snacks or even a well-deserved cold beer after you're done on the slopes. And, for the littlies in the family, there's a toboganning area right alongside the Alpine Meadow too!
