Travel update:

22 February 2011 - Christchurch has been struck by another earthquate with the loss of life. We will update as information comes to hand. Some accommodation, places or activities mentioned on this site may not be operational.

Christchurch  is known as  the 'Garden City' of the south. With beautiful Hagley Park and the Avon River running through the city, young and old can enjoy its striking beauty.  Take time here to enjoy the many wonderful park areas and family-friendly activities this city has to offer.

Two great places to visit while in the area are Lyttelton and Akaroa. Lyttelton Harbour saw the first four ships carrying European settlers to New Zealand as early as 1850. The harbour is still used as Christchurch's main port. Akaroa has a real French feel to it and French is still spoken in this village. Back in the 1800s a French sea captain bought land on Banks Peninsula and this is how it got its French flair.

Waipara

The Waipara area is best known for its vineyards, but there is one great family attraction that stands out - the Weka Pass Railway. Trains run on the first and thrid Sunday of each month and most public holidays.

Christchurch City

A fun way to get to know Christchurch city and include an activity that the children will enjoy is to catch a tram. The restored trams take visitors around the central part of the city and the driver gives a very informative commentary. In summer or winter take a trip out to New Brighton and walk with your children along the 300-metre pier, or just enjoy a walk or a picnic in Hagley Park.

Lyttelton

Lyttelton is a short drive from Christchurch and lies on the other side of the Port Hills. Enjoy a coffee and walk around this historical town and if time permits visit the Lyttelton TImeball Station.

Akaroa

Plan to take a day out to visit Akaroa. The drive to this coastal town with a French flair is enjoyable and with shops and cafes it's pleasant just wandering around. On your walks one of the first things you will notice are the French street names: for example, Rue Benoit and Rue Jolie. If your children are lucky they might even see the local town crier dressed in his French costume. The shoreline around French Bay is ideal for kayaking and sailing.
