A number of easy to moderate walks start from the Chateau Tongariro Hotel varying in length from 30 minutes through to two hours. For the older kids, try the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. An eight hour trek that passes Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro.
 
Visit the Department of Conservation Visitors Centre and learn about the Tongariro National Park, a dual world heritage area. Informational displays inform you on the geological history of the park and the alpine wildlife that inhibits the area. Also view the history of skiing within Tongariro National Park.
 
35 minutes drive from the Chateau Tongariro is the Tokaanu Thermal Hot Pools and the Tongariro Trout Hatchery. Both are excellent attractions for families.
