Wanaka is a holiday destination all year round and is a favourite place for many families who come back here year after year. In summer, with the hot weather, families make the most of activities around Lake Wanaka, while in winter they hit the slopes of the local ski-field.

Lake Wanaka is New Zealand's fourth largest lake. In autumn the colour of the trees is beautiful, with the poplars that line the shore turning brilliant yellow. The wharf, near the information centre, has some amazingly big eels swimming around its piers and this will keep children glued to the spot for some time.

The town is a bit quieter than Queenstown, but still has enough of an atmosphere to give families a buzz, with international and domestic tourists making the most of the location and activities centred around the area.
