Taupo

Taupo sits on the northern end of Lake Taupo, New Zealand's largest lake; its waters flow into the great Waikato River. Other than its lake, Taupo boasts many hot thermal areas, some open free to the public, as well as a variety of activities for your family to do. Many have age, height or weight restrictions so make sure you check these out before booking.

As the water follows into Lake Taupo it passes through the narrow canon, roaring out the other end.

Outdoor activities range from sightseeing through to more active activities like mountain biking or even trying a bungy jump. Younger children will enjoy the park at the domain which also has a miniature train operating.

This is a great place to stop if travelling between Wellington and Auckland. Either stay a night or two and take in its sights, or enjoy one of the many parks if only on a flying visit. We recommend Taupo Domain with its Superloo, as this has a free parent room, play area outside, and is just across the road from the shops.

Wairakei

Located north of Taupo along State Highway 1 is Wairakei which includes the thermal area known as The Caters of the Moon. The walk around the thermal mud pools takes about 30 minutes; just make sure your children are closely supervised for their own safety.

Huka Falls

The Huka Falls is one of those walks not to miss and it takes around 20 minutes to do the short walk to view the falls. Visit the Taupo visitor centre to find out the times when the Aratiatia Dam's control gates open to see a fantastic sight with the water bubbling away as the gates open.
